WatchSignals guide
Global market sessions, without the guesswork.
Markets do not share one universal trading day. A Sydney cash-equity session, a Tokyo equity session, a London order book and a New York core session each follow their own local clock and calendar. This guide explains how to compare those regular windows without turning a city clock into a misleading “market open” indicator.
Regular hours in the venue’s own timezone
The following are educational reference windows checked against official sources on 4 October 2026. They do not confirm a particular trading day. All times here are local to the named city.
Sydney — ASX cash market
For planning, use approximately 10:00–16:00 Sydney time for normal trading. The current ASX timetable places the opening auction around 09:59 with randomisation, followed by normal trading around 09:59:45 until 16:00. The planner deliberately rounds the start to 10:00. The later closing auction is a separate phase, so 16:00 is not the end of every market process. Consult the detailed ASX phase schedule for precise order handling.
Tokyo — TSE domestic stocks
The regular morning session is 09:00–11:30 Tokyo time; the afternoon session is 12:30–15:30. Our planner excludes the midday break. Order acceptance begins earlier than trading, so the ability to submit an order does not itself mean the exchange is executing trades.
London — LSE Main Market
The Main Market regular window is 08:00–16:30 London time. Opening and closing auctions, and different trading services, need their own rules. This guide does not combine proposed or extended sessions with the Main Market window.
New York — NYSE core equities
The core session is 09:30–16:00 New York time. Pre-opening, early or late sessions vary by market and instrument. A broker offering extended trading does not mean every listing trades on the same timetable.
What a session overlap means
An overlap is simply the intersection of two specified time windows. It can help you organise research, compare releases or schedule your own market checks. It does not guarantee liquidity, volatility, a favourable price or a trading opportunity.
Sydney and Tokyo regular equity sessions overlap, but Tokyo's midday break splits the shared window. London and New York share part of their regular sessions. During periods when US and UK daylight-saving rules differ, the London/New York overlap changes. Those are equity-session comparisons; the familiar Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York “forex sessions” refer to broader dealing activity in a decentralised market, not identical exchange opening bells. Your broker's instrument schedule is the right place to confirm forex availability.
Why fixed UTC timetables can mislead
Venue schedules are normally expressed in local time. A venue keeping the same local opening hour can shift by one hour in UTC when daylight saving changes. Sydney, London and New York make seasonal changes on different dates. Brisbane and Tokyo do not currently make seasonal clock changes. Brisbane can therefore differ from Sydney even though both cities are in eastern Australia.
The WatchSignals clock converts an instant with browser IANA timezone data, rather than adding a permanently fixed offset. The planner applies the timezone rules for your selected date. It shows the converted local date at each endpoint because an Australian session can start on the previous UTC date. An up-to-date browser and an accurate device clock are essential.
How to read the planning tool
Pick one local session date shared by all four venue labels, then select the timezone in which you want to read the results. This is a comparison of those named local dates; it is not a list of all sessions that fall inside a single 24-hour period in your reference city. Sydney's converted window may begin the previous day. The displayed overlaps are calculated from the listed regular windows, with the Tokyo lunch break removed.
Try a date in January and another in July to see different seasonal offsets. Then compare dates around the US or UK clock change. A weekend produces a warning, but the tool does not calculate exchange holidays. A weekday result is still an illustration, not a confirmed session.
City time is not exchange status
Time alone cannot establish whether trading is possible. Holidays, special closures, early closes, circuit breakers, maintenance, unscheduled halts and instrument-specific rules can override the regular pattern. The WatchSignals planner is not connected to a live exchange-status feed. Holidays, early closes, exchange halts and special sessions are not automatically reflected in its regular windows. We do not display inferred “open now” badges.
Before acting on a schedule, verify the exchange calendar, product, venue, order phase, broker access and relevant notices. For Tokyo, consider the intraday break; for Sydney, distinguish normal trading from auctions; for New York, distinguish core from extended trading. A crypto panel can cover a market that trades outside weekday equity hours, but venue maintenance and access restrictions can still apply.
A daily session-planning routine
Return each market day to coordinate regular openings and overlaps in your reference timezone. Use “Use today” if you previously saved a date, and revisit around DST changes. The WatchSignals clock and planner work independently of the optional TradingView panels.
- Set your reference city. Choose a clock timezone and check the local date and UTC offset. Use the six-city strip to orient yourself before reading a market panel.
- Plan a window. Select a session date and reference timezone. Read the start and end dates, not just the hour. Follow the official calendar links if you need an actual trading-day decision.
- Load market panels when useful. TradingView supplies the ticker, stock and index overview, cross rates, crypto, metals, energy, economic calendar and comparison chart. Availability depends on its service and your browser/network.
- Check instrument and timestamp. A CFD based on an index is not the cash index itself. A continuous futures symbol is not a single dated contract. Prices may be delayed and currencies may differ across panels.
- Use comparison carefully. Raw prices of Bitcoin, gold and an equity index use different units. Percentage comparisons can help describe relative changes, but they do not establish correlation or predict what happens next.
- Check the release context. Calendar forecasts, previous values and actual results are different fields. Confirm the calendar timezone and source before scheduling a check.
